Second Look: ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME MARGARET by Judy Blume

I wanted to read the class ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME MARGARET.  I also wanted to revisit the Judy Blume novel from my childhood.  It was definitely entertaining.  And definitely written in the 70s.

Title: Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret
Author: Judy Blume
Published Date: 2009 Reprint
Age: Juvenile/Young Adult (11+ years)

Margaret Simon moves to New Jersey from New York to attend a new school.  On the verge of turning 12, Margaret worries about fitting in with the girls in her class.  When she befriends Nancy, she fits into a small group of girls that start a Secret Club.  The four members of the group talk about boys and kissing and getting their periods – the ultimate goal by the end of 6th grade.

Throughout the novel, Margaret talks to God (privately) about her worries (namely, wanting her breasts to grow).  The conflicts that ensue deal with family (her parents’ distrust of Grandma; her mother’s parents coming to visit) and a new teacher at school – Miles J. Benedict, Jr.

I really enjoyed it.  It was a little cheesy, but it was written in 1970.  But a lot of the ideas are still really relevant to today’s times.  It’s been a long time since I was 11 going on 12, so I think even that might be relevant as far as trying to fit in with girls, having crushes, and wanting to get your period.

There’s not much to say about it, honestly.  I really enjoyed reading it again.  I think I’ll even make my niece read it when she’s 11…you know, in 10 years.

Rating… 8/10 stars.
