Second Look: Out of Sight, Out of Time by Ally Carter

CoveOps Report March 25, 2012.
The Operative re-read books 1 and 2 in the Gallagher Girls series, and (finally) read books 3 and 4 in record time. Was officially prepped and ready for Out of Sight, Out of Time. The Operative has concluded that Ally Carter continues to get more and more awesome with every book she writes.

*It must be noted, however, that spoilers for the previous books will probably be included  in this review, as it is impossible to write a review of a continuing storyline without divulging some details.

The Story: Out of Sight, Out of Time brings us to the end of Cammie’s junior year at Gallagher Academy. It’s the start of Cammie’s summer vacay, and she decided to run away to protect her family and friends and everyone she cares about. She intends to use her three months of vacation to do whatever she can to find the Circle of Cavan and destroy them.

That’s not entirely true.

Cammie wakes up in a convent in the Alps, and learns from a kindly nun-to-be that it’s the beginning of October. Not only does Cam have no idea where she is or how she got there, she has no memory of anything since the day she left Gallagher Academy at the beginning of June. She makes her way back to Gallagher Academy only to be met with more questions, a top secret ancient terrorist organization hot on her heels, and three very worried (and somewhat angry) best friends. Cammie wants answers, not to mention the memory of her lost summer. Bex, Liza, Macey, Aunt Abby, and Zach and a few more friends are all along for the ride as Cam goes on a bizarre journey across the world to try to piece together the last four months of her life.

The Low Down: The mystery surrounding Cammie’s lost memories, not to mention why the Circle of Cavan wants her so badly keeps readers on their toes from the first page to the last. We get a lot of surprises in book 5, including answers about Cammie’s father, new info about Gilly Gallagher, and what the Circle is willing to do to get to Cammie and why. It’s fast paced, suspenseful, and brings new surprises around every corner.

Bex, Liz, and Macey are still the best sidekicks I have ever encountered in a work of fiction, and I want them on my BFF squad ASAP. With Zach now attending Gallagher Academy, he’s also a constant presence in Cam’s adventures. His and Cam’s relationship has some ups and downs in book 5, but for an almost-boyfriend he sticks his neck out for Cammie in ways that make me wonder why such a guy can’t exist in real life. Yes, I know he’s a trained assassin. But some girls find that sexy… so sue me!

Cammie experiences a lot of physical, emotional, and mental trauma in this novel, but it’s not a downer. The characters all still carry Carter’s signature sense of humor, and Cammie’s voice telling the story is as light and fun as it has been in the previous books. We also get to see a side of Cammie that we’ve seen before, just not with so much intensity… Cammie is scared, but incredibly determined to find out what happened to her. This adds to the suspense of the novel especially given her memory loss. This one is definitely a page turner.

The Bottom Line: Carter’s fifth installment in the Gallagher Girls series delivers in a big way. We get answers to lots of questions, and, though the story has a good resolution, it gives enough of an opening to promise at least one more book about our favorite spies.

P.S. If you want even MORE spy related fun, check out for a lot of Gallagher Girl goodies. This Operative is using all her willpower to not buy a Gallagher Academy iPhone case and a Blackthorne Institute for Boys hoodie.

P.P.S Operative is now eagerly awaiting the release and/or more details of Heist Society 3, and is very disgruntled that extensive internet searches have returned no information on the subject.

P.P.P.S Here’s a book trailer, if you don’t believe me about this book’s awesomeness.

Thank you so much! It definitely helps to reread or at least read a summary of Book 4 before reading Out of Sight, Out of Time. I think I would’ve been so confused if I hadn’t reread them all. Thanks for following!

Thanks so much! I aim to please :) And, seriously. How can you not love Zach?! I think he’s one of those mysterious bad boys (who deep down is actually a good guy) that we all would love to meet up with.
