Casting Divergent: If I had anything to do with it (which I don’t….)

For the last few months, we’ve been clamoring over who is going to play which character when our favorite YA novels head for the big screen. We anxiously waited to hear who would play Katniss Everdeen (and, of course, Gale and Peeta), Clary Fray and Jace Wayland, and we’re still wondering who the final choice for Lucinda Price will be.

Now that rights to Divergent have been acquired, Veronica Roth’s series is surely on the fast track to megastardom. Which got me thinking about who some of the prime casting candidates would be. In an ideal world, who would be the brightest and best to represent Roth’s dystopian masterpiece?

Well, since you asked, I’ve got a few ideas of my own… We’ll start with Tris, the story’s main character and heroine.

Mia Wasikowska

The actress cast as Beatrice (Tris) Prior has to bring a lot to the table. It must be someone who can play a versatile character. Tris is somewhat naive and insecure initially, but deep down inside her lies a badass who knows how to kick ass and take names when she has to. Physically, she’s very plain. Not unattractive, but not some stunning beauty, either. Think Bella Swan, just with more personality. In a Q&A with Roth, she envisioned Tris to look a bit like Mia Wasikowska (of Alice in Wonderland fame). I think that’s a good place to start.

*Note: I am well aware that Tris is blond-haired and blue eyed, so I admit I took some liberties with a few of my choices.

Emily Browning
At first, I had my doubts about Browning playing a tough girl character. Probably because I had only ever seen her as Violet Beaudelaire in the Series of Unfortunate Events movie. Then I saw Suckerpunch and, as Babydoll, she blew me away. Babydoll is the same type of character as Tris. Both are scared and insecure about spontaneously ending up in a completely new life and having to try to survive it (figuratively AND literally). But once they learn to fight back, all bets are off. I can easily see her in this role.

Chloe Grace Moretz
It seems like every time you turn around, CGM is in another new movie. Though it’s been her roles the last year or so that have really garnered her all the attention. Playing Hit-Girl in Kick Ass definitely gave her an edge and she plays young, soft spoken Isabelle in Hugo, the Martin Scorsese adaptation of The Invention of Hugo Cabret (in theaters November 23!). She has a lot of range for such a young actress, which would definitely qualify her for consideration as Tris.

AnnaSophia Robb
Embodying Bethany Hamilton is a tough task. The Soul Surfer actress had to play the trauma-struck, yet strong willed Hamilton and successfully brought her uplifting spirit to the big screen. Her previous roles prove she’s a tough actress who is capable of playing tough, multi-dimensional characters. She can easily bring that same sense of hard work and determination to Tris’s character. At first glance, Robb may seem a little glam to play Tris, but I still think she can pull it off. One thing is for sure… she’s come a long way from playing obnoxious troublemaker Violet Beauregarde in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Saoirse Ronan
After her role in Atonement, is there any doubt this girl can act?! Have you seen the list of nominations after her name? She has a rather impressive resume for a young actress. There is a lot of depth to her acting, and a lot of her roles were in some very heavy films (such as The Lovely Bones). She’s clearly no stranger to intense, dramatic acting. I also think she has all the perfect features to play our favorite faction jumper. Based solely on physical characteristics, she’s hands down my favorite actress for the role of Tris. Rumor has it she was also supposed to star as the title character in the film adaptation of Avi’s The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle before the project encountered legal problems.

So, fellow bloggers and blog readers… who do YOU want to see play Tris in the potential Divergent movie? Leave us a comment or two and let us know!

Stay tuned for next week’s episode, in which I try to discern which Hollywood hottie can bring it hardcore to play the role of Four. *rubs hands together*

I like your choice for Tris: AnnaSophia Robb. In my opinion, the others don’t fit as Tris and they are popular. I think Divergent’s author, Veronica Roth, had said she preferred an unknown over one that is very known. Still, I like your choice. In my opinion, I really like Ginny Gardner as Tris. She’s unknown, small, and has subtle beauty, like Tris has. [:

I’m not pro- or anti-ChloMo, so I’m being completely objective here… I would support her being cast as Tris only because she is a young actress which might contrast well against an older actor playing Four. You could be surprised be her though. I felt the same way about Jennifer Lawrence when they cast her as Katniss. I was disappointed initially and thought the movie would be a train wreck. Clearly, I was DEAD WRONG.

Anna Sophia Robb and Chloe Moretz are both too girly to play Tris!! Saoirse Ronan def has my vote!!! She has the physical characteristics and overall persona to fully fulfill the role of Tris!! Innocent, quirky, and a closet badass!!! Gonna be a GREAT movie!!!! Can’t wait I love the books!! :)

I read somewhere that Veronica Roth, when asked on twitter, said Mia Wasikowska was very similar to the Tris she envisioned. For me, definitely Mia or Saoirse Ronan.

I really like all of the choices but I think annasophia Robb is almost too pretty for it if it makes me tris has a subtle beauty to her while Robb is more in your face pretty. I think Mia would do an okay job as tris and I think she fits in the more naive part of tris but I don’t know if she could pull off the tough edgy part of the character. That being said I think my favorite choice is saoirse ronan because I feel her look fits well and we have seen her be a more delicate character in The Lovely Bones but we have also seen her be able to be strong female characters like in Hanna.
